Everyone is getting ready to leave for spring break in 3 days. Gulf Shores Alabama; Destin, Fl; Myrtle Beach, SC; Orlando, FL…. just a few of the places our Big Rapids friends are traveling to for spring break. The fact that both of us work in education may be why so many people we know travel or it just may be that people travel more now.
For those of you going to the Destin Area, I’ve talked about restaurants that we love in the area in a previous post, and I talked about areas to stay in another and fun things to do in a third.
I’ve said it before I think, but as a heads up ~ the traffic in the Destin area during spring break is horrendous! There is no way to sugar coat it. A few years ago we decided to try to beat it, so we have a found a route that runs parallel to hwy 98 (the main road through Destin) on the north side of the road, there are a few round-abouts and you travel though one of the ends of the parking lots of a big box store, but it is worth it. It is definitely worth taking a look at a map and planning an alternate route.
And speaking of routes, if I haven’t mentioned before the very best way to get to Destin from the north is highway 65 to Montgomery and jump on route 331 right into Destin from there. It’s a lovely drive, you don’t get lost, and there is so much to see and do along the way.
Just as you get off of Highway 65 in Montgomery, before hitting the route 331, there is a full on southern style Waffle House restaurant that I highly recommend. Some are turned off by Waffle House, I LOVE them! The pecan waffles are my favorite!
Along 331 you’ll go past the Hyundai plant where they make automobiles. through the towns of Luverne with it’s elementary school with a fighter jet on the grounds, the town of Brantley and Opp where the homes all have front porches and spring wreaths hanging on the front doors.
You’ll pass into Florida just after Florala, don’t forget to stop at the Piggly Wiggly and get your boiled peanuts and look for gators in the lake there. If you’re lucky you’ll happen upon groups of high school students taking prom pictures next to the lake.
Enjoy your drive. The weather will get warmer as you travel from Michigan, you’ll see the purple flower bushes blooming and the traffic will get heavy as Saturday wears on. Another hint, if the traffic on 65 gets too heavy, you can always choose route 231 that picks up in Bowling Green, Kentucky. We’ve done it before and it’s a beautiful drive. The speed limit is usually only 55 or 60, but if the traffic on interstate 65 gets unbearable, it is worth checking out.
