There is a brand new website I’ve been using that caters to active and former military members. http://www.americanforcestravel.com. I’ve used it several times this week and I’ve found that rental cars are significantly less than any other site I’ve used and hotels can be significantly less as well. Airline travel was pretty much the same, but I’ve found that on every site I’ve tried, military or not. The hotel I booked in Cocoa Beach was a 47% discount off the lowest price I had found anywhere else and both of the rental cars I booked were about 30% less than I found on other sites. This site has only been up for about a month, it is a subsidiary of Priceline.com and I highly recommend it.
I also use a site called Armed Forces Vacation Club http://www.afvclub.com. This site has a large number of condos world wide for rent at quite a reduced price. They often have “sales”, a week long stay for $299 in places and during times that they have an ‘excess inventory’. In other words, you probably won’t get a week long stay in Florida during spring break for $299, but if you are flexible with your time or your destination, you can get a REAL DEAL. They offer a large selection of places world wide, all year long, that are not a part of these ‘sales’ but are still available at a price lower than other sites I’ve checked.
If camping is your thing, check out militarycampgrounds.us . They put out a monthly newsletter listing updates and changes and the website has a link that lists all the military campgrounds in the U.S. and a link to go to each of their website. Some of these places have cabins for rent as well, so each is worth checking out. We have stayed at 3 of them and highly recommend each for different reasons.
The first is “Mid Bay Shores” in Niceville, Florida. Their website says this:
“Mid-Bay Shores is a gated Air Force recreational area located in Niceville, Fl. The site offers 25 furnished cabins and 26 full hook-up RV spots that can be used by military affiliated personnel. Mid-Bay boasts beautiful white sandy shores on the Choctawhatchee Bay with easy access to Destin, Fl.” It’s very very affordable place to stay, and perfect for quiet and tranquility and a little sea-life.
There is also the “Destin Army Recreation Area” right in Destin, Florida (on the bay side). This is a full service operation! Villas, hotel rooms, RV sites, really nice pool and a marina. We rent pontoons and paddle boards there every year, it’s very easily accessible and very affordable.
The Farish Recreation Area, just up the mountain from Colorado Springs, Colorado is drop-dead gorgeous. With everything available for rent from a Duplex to cabins to rv or tent camping. They also have a lodge available for large groups. The hiking and relaxing here are spectacular and again, the pricing is very affordable.
